My Explosive Ordnance Disposal (Bomb Squad) unit bought 20 VFX3524M late last year just prior to re-deploying to Iraq and they are performing flawlessly.

Last year during OIF we were using commercial XXXXXXXX* and XXXXXXXX* inverters to recharge batteries and power our equipment, but we had problems with durability. When we got back to the states we researched and dicovered the Outback family of inverters. Robin was kind enough to send out two samples for us to test. He sent a VFX3524M and a FX2024M w/turbo. Both worked great, but we decided on the 3524 due to our power requirements. After a long drawn out battle we received authorization to buy one for each of our vehicles.

After arriving in country and waiting for all of our gear to arrive we were finally able to wire and mount our inverters. We used 25' slave cables to connect to the power receptacle on the HMMWV and then cut a 100' heavy duty extension cord to wire them in with. For the AC-in 25' and the AC-out 75'. Then we plug in a power strip to connect everything. With the 75' cord we can run power out quite a ways and if we need just a little more the slave cable allows us another 25'.

We use them to recharge our robots, computers, power tools and myriad other electronics. So far they have proven extremely reliable and all of my teams swear by them.

The new OutBack VFX series is a ventilated version of Outback's original sealed FX series modular "building block” sine wave inverter/charger that can be used for both small and large power systems. By allowing cooler outside airflow through the internal electronics, more AC power is available and operation in extremely hot environments is improved when compared to the sealed FX series. Each OutBack FX or VFX inverter/charger is a complete power conversion system - DC to AC inverter, battery charger and AC transfer switch. Additional FX inverter/chargers can be connected at any time in either parallel (120 VAC), series (120/240 VAC), or three-phase (120Y208 VAC) configurations. This allows a system to be tailored to meet the specific power conversion requirements of the application, both at the time of the installation and in the future. The OutBack VFX series is also available in export versions with 230 VAC, 50 hz output that can be connected in parallel (230 VAC) or in three phase (230Y400 VAC) configurations. Like the FX series, the OutBack VFX is also designed to survive harsh environments around the world. The full screened vent openings are "bug-proof" and the die-cast aluminum chassis protects and keeps the power conversion components cool in very hot environments even when operated at high power for extended periods. The VFX can be used in high ambient applications up to 60oC (with reduced output ratings). The OutBack VFX series inverter/charger system is designed for both residential and commercial stand-alone or back-up power applications with battery energy storage. It is designed to operate as a coordinated system with the other OutBack products i.e. the PSDC, PSAC and PSR enclosures as well as the MX60 MPPT charge controllers and MATE system controller and display.

Here's what David Reaser, one of our senior technicians had to say about Outback's new vented VFX3524 inverter, following an intensive 72 hour burn-in evaluation.

"I threw every load we had in the shop at this inverter, resistive, inductive, reactive loads, it didn't matter, nothing fazed it. Loads that would have shut down or even fried some inverters, had no effect on the output. It just kept right on putting out a perfect sine wave."

This is what causes the high harmonic distortion level. Definitely not like your utility company ! To your appliances this like swallowing a glass of nails. Not to healthy ! In fact this type of waveform can actually shorten the life of many appliances.
